midnight cry: Boko Haram attacks Jakana town in Borno state in the midnight

Suspected members of the Boko Haram group have reportedly attacked Jakana town located about 50km from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. Premium Times reports that the attack which occurred on Thursday night, July 26, was carried out by heavily armed gunmen who first attacked the military camp on the western flank of the town before advancing towards the town. “As I am talking to you now we have to retreat to Kolori village ahead of Jakana because the gunmen came in from the direction of Benishek,” a police source who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak to journalists said. “We can’t say the level of damage or casualty for now because even as I talk to you now the shooting is still on.” A security official said such attack by the terrorists was expected after the group recently carted ammunition from the military. “I can say that we expect this kind of attack to happen, following the recent attacks on military and carting away of arms cache and heavy equipment,” he said. Sahara Reporters, citing sources, states that the attack which began at about 6pm caused pandemonium in the town as dwellers fled their homes. A vigilante source said the insurgents stormed the town in utility vehicles and started shooting sporadically for hours. “The villagers ran into bushes for dear life, as military engaged the insurgents in a gun duel,” the source said. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, July 26, assured Nigerians of his administration’s effort to return the country on the path of peace and prosperity. He also hailed the enormous contributions of the armed forces to his administration’s determination to restore peace in the country. The president made the remarks during the graduation of 182 senior course 40 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji in Kaduna State, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. He pledged that the federal government would continue to raise the combat readiness of the military for effective and efficient security operations across the country.
